The curated works of the author & artist

1986-1987 Rhondda Heritage Centre

Designing the outdoor adventure play-scape for the Rhondda Heritage Centre was a delight. The theme I proposed was the creation of carbon fuels and in particular, coal and called it, The Energy Zone.

I researched how sunlight is changed into coal and then designed a series of linked playground features that took one aspect of the theme- for example photosynthesis and sited them on a restored area of waste ground adjacent to the pit that was completely covered in coal dust sludge.

We had a year to clear the site and turn the design and build around; the structures were completed and the site planted just in time for opening and our first young clients.
